Chicago, IL ? February 8, 2012 ? Zacks.com announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include Verizon Communications (VZ), Coinstar Inc. (CSTR), Netflix Inc. (NFLX), Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Comcast Corp. (CMCSA).

Here are highlights from Tuesday?s Analyst Blog:

    Verizon to Offer Streaming Services

The largest U.S. mobile service provider Verizon Communications (VZ) has formed a joint venture with Coinstar Inc. (CSTR) to launch nationwide video rental and online streaming services comparable to those of its rival Netflix Inc. (NFLX).

The venture would combine Coinstar’s Redbox new release DVDs and Blu-ray disc rentals with an on-demand streaming and download service from Verizon. The service is slated to be introduced in the second half of the year. While the financial terms were not disclosed, Verizon will hold a majority 65% stake in the venture while Coinstar own the remaining 35%.

The success of both Verizon and Coinstar will depend on the pricing of the video streaming services and the quality offered in the booming subscription video service market. The alliance would strengthen their respective competitive positions against Netflix and other online rivals like Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Hulu Plus.

The pact represents Verizon?s first venture in video streaming beyond its operating region. The company currently offers Web video services through its FiOS TV service, which is gaining strong momentum in the U.S. market despite stiff competition from cable providers like Comcast Corp. (CMCSA).

We believe the venture is highly beneficial to Verizon, as it will attract new subscribers and add a new line of business, in turn drawing additional revenues. Coinstar revenue jumped 33% in the fourth quarter of 2011 largely backed by Redbox. In addition, we expect Redbox to boost Verizon?s profitability when the venture comes online, despite additional expenditure on the service.

At year-end 2011, Redbox had 35,400 kiosks nationwide in McDonald?s, grocery and drugstores while Verizon had 4.2 million FiOS Video customers and 4.8 million FiOS Internet customers.

While waiting for the company to move ahead with the venture and its pricing, we are maintaining our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock. Currently, the stock retains the Zacks #3 (Hold) Rank for the short term (1?3 months).

Review: Odd experimentation reveals muddled result (AP)

“Purple Naked Ladies,” The Internet (Odd Future)

The producer duo of Matt Martians and Syd Tha Kyd, of the group OFWGKTA, misses the mark with their new album “Purple Naked Ladies,” a spacey foray into digital sounds that results in more confusion than clarity.

Since it was recorded on Odd Future’s own label, the two artists, known together as The Internet, have obviously been given a wide berth to play around with sounds and schemes. And they do. To a fault. The digital soundscape quickly becomes muddy and the musical purpose lost.

Some songs like “Fastlane” offer a more traditional R&B approach. “Ode To A Dream” also promises something cohesive, with nice vocal features from Kilo Kish and Coco O. But the latter half of the song devolves into a swirl of reverse-played beats and tinny electronic drum hits. It’s hard to image this as a radio staple, or even a playlist favorite.

On “Violet Nude Women,” it often sounds like there are no fewer than six instrumental sounds vying for attention, each attempting to elbow the others out of the way and take prominence. The melody is light and playful, but it soon gets lost as disparate noises collide.

The Internet is essentially a proof of concept group. They are decent producers, but they’ll need a star up front to truly shine.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “She Dgaf,” is the lone plausible track for repeated play, curse words aside. It’s got a nice hook and some semblance of a beat, something most other tracks on this album lack.

FILE – In this May, 26, 2010 file photo, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg talks about the social network site’s new privacy settings in Palo Alto, Calif. The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 that Facebook is preparing to file initial paperwork for an offering that could raise as much as $10 billion and value the company at $75 billion to $100 billion (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File)

(AP) ? When Facebook makes its long-expected debut as a public company this spring, the social-networking company will likely vault into the ranks of the largest public companies in the world, alongside McDonald’s, Amazon.com and Bank of America.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Facebook is preparing to file initial paperwork for an offering that could raise as much as $10 billion and value the company at $75 billion to $100 billion. The filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission could come as early as Wednesday, with an initial public offering of stock in three or four months.

The targeted amount would slot it among the world’s 25 largest IPOs, although as recently as November 2010, General Motors raised $15.8 billion when it shed majority control by the U.S. government.

The IPOs of 14 companies would rank higher than Facebook’s, according to investment adviser Renaissance Capital. Among them were Visa Inc.’s $17.9 billion IPO in March 2008, the largest for a U.S. company, and world-topper Agricultural Bank of China Ltd., which raised $19.3 billion in July 2010, not including extra shares issued to meet demand.

Facebook spokesman Larry Wu said the company will not comment on IPO-related speculation. The Journal had cited unnamed people familiar with the matter.

The Journal also said that Facebook was close to picking Morgan Stanley as the lead underwriter, which would be a setback for rival Goldman Sachs. Both declined comment to The Associated Press.

The buzz surrounding an outsized haul for Facebook’s founders, employees and early investors remains a hopeful sign for capital markets following a deep recession. At the reported price, Facebook’s IPO would be the biggest for a U.S. Internet company ever ? topping the debut of one of its main rivals, Google Inc.

“We are expecting 2012 to be a year of recovery for the IPO market led by the Facebook IPO,” said Kathy Smith, Renaissance Capital’s principal.

The event will follow a string of tepid debuts by technology startups including social game maker Zynga and discount advertiser Groupon. The stocks of both companies are just pennies above their offering prices in December and November respectively. Zynga’s stock fell 5 percent below the IPO price on its first day of trading.

Facebook’s will be the most anticipated tech IPO since Google went public in August 2004. Not including shares sold by early investors, the Internet search giant raised $1.2 billion and grabbed a market value of $23 billion, the biggest so far for a U.S. Internet company. The IPO raised $1.9 billion, including shares sold by early investors and extra stock issued to meet the heavy demand. It’s not known whether Facebook’s $10 billion target includes shares owned by early investors.

Facebook’s reported valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion compares with about $100 billion for McDonald’s Corp., $90 billion for Citigroup Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. and $75 billion for Bank of America Corp. It would exceed the market cap of $55 billion for Hewlett-Packard Co., one of the world’s largest technology companies by revenue.

Both Facebook and Google earn most of their money from advertising and are now competing to gain as much information as possible about their users to help advertisers target niche audiences.

According to eMarketer, Facebook is expected to grow its share of the U.S. display ad market to about 20 percent this year from 16 percent in 2011, above second-ranked Yahoo’s expected share of about 13 percent. For overall online ad revenue, Facebook is seen grabbing just 8 percent of the market this year, compared with 45 percent for Google.

EMarketer estimates that Facebook’s ad revenue will grow 52 percent to $5.78 billion this year and will reach $7 billion in 2013.

Despite presumably topping Google’s public launch, Facebook spent more time growing behind the veil of private ownership than its rival.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates in 2004 and is debuting on stock markets in its eighth year. Google’s IPO came six years after being founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. When Google turned eight in August 2006, its market cap was roughly $116 billion. Today, the company is worth nearly $190 billion ? down from a peak of about $235 billion in November 2007.

Investors may be asked to bet heavily on the belief that Facebook will continue to revolutionize the way people communicate around the globe. Even with Facebook’s heady growth rate, Google had ad revenue last year of more than five times what Facebook is expected to get in 2013. Yet it is Google that is mimicking Facebook in building a rival social network called Plus.

“There’s the general feeling that Facebook might be the future of the way the Internet works,” said eMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson.

Zuckerberg, 27, is already worth $17.5 billion, based on the latest estimates from Forbes magazine. Most of that wealth is drawn from the value of Facebook shares that have traded among a small universe of well-heeled investors that buy stakes in companies before they go public.

As the company gauges public demand for its stock, the number of shares offered and the price asked could change significantly. Groupon had to refile its securities paperwork repeatedly as regulators questioned some of its accounting methods. Even Google took in less than it hoped as people shunned an unorthodox auction-based offering.

John Fitzgibbon Jr., publisher of IPOScoop.com, said it’s too early to get excited.

“Until they actually put the ink on the paper and push it across the desk of the SEC, it’s all speculation,” he said.

The possible filing next week isn’t all that surprising.

Federal rules require companies with at least $10 million in assets and more than 500 shareholders to disclose its quarterly financial results and other details. The reporting requirement kicks in 120 days after the fiscal year in which a company exceeds the shareholder threshold for the first time.

Facebook’s fiscal year ends Dec. 31, so it has until late April 2012 to comply with this requirement, having hit the 500-shareholder threshold last year. Because it typically takes three or four months after filing paperwork to issue the IPO, a Wednesday filing would allow it to meet the deadline. If it happens in May, it could become a lucrative birthday gift for Zuckerberg, who will turn 28 that month.

Thunderstorms, tornadoes possible in southern U.S. (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Severe thunderstorms were expected to spread across several southeastern U.S. states on Sunday into Monday with tornadoes, high winds and large hail possible, weather forecasters said.

The potential for severe storms stretched from the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi to southern Indiana and Ohio, according to AccuWeather.com meteorologist Bill Deger.

“Some of the thunderstorms are even expected to spawn tornadoes, making for an especially dangerous situation given the veil of night,” Deger said.

In Alabama, residents were bracing for storms that could hit after dark on Sunday or overnight with a strong cold front from the west combining with warm moist air flowing up from the Gulf of Mexico, said Mary Keiser, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama.

“The best dynamics for this are going to be across the northwest part of the state and lesser so as you move to the southeast part of the state,” Keiser said of the forecast for severe weather to strike in Alabama.

The weather service said thunderstorms could bring wind gusts up to 80 mph, tornadoes or gulf ball-sized hail in Mississippi. Farther west, the weather service warned of a high fire danger in Texas with wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

Weather.com said the greatest tornado threat appeared to be in eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, northern Louisiana and northern Mississippi.

In Reno, Nevada, meanwhile, snowfall provided welcome relief to firefighters who were monitoring remaining hotspots from a blaze that raged near the outskirts of the city beginning Thursday, destroying 30 houses and prompting thousands of people to flee their homes.

“As long as we keep on getting snow instead of rain, it looks like we’ll be okay, at least for the next couple of days,” said Mark Regan, spokesman for the Sierra Fire Protection District.

Rain had threatened the area with flash flooding on Friday night. Emergency responders had the blaze 100 percent contained as of Saturday, and all residents have been allowed to return to their homes, Regan said.

In the upper Midwest, freezing drizzle was expected to make roads and sidewalks slippery from southeastern Minnesota into Wisconsin, changing to snow later Sunday, the weather service said. Up to 4 inches of snow was expected farther north in southeast North Dakota and west central Minnesota.

In the northeast United States, a fast-moving storm from central Pennsylvania eastward dropped up to a foot of snow in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts on Saturday.

Santorum: 2 rivals not electable over health care

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum says Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich aren’t electable because they’ve both supported policies too similar President Barack Obama’s health care plan.

In Thursday night’s GOP debate, Santorum says the health care plan Romney helped implement when he was governor of Massachusetts was an “abject disaster.” Santorum says it is the basis for Obamacare and will make it impossible for Romney to debate Obama on the issue.

Santorum says Gingrich repeatedly supported “the core” of Obama’s health care plan before disavowing it later.

Santorum says he’s the only candidate who can stand up to Obama on the issue.

Gingrich and Romney are both defending themselves and say they can stand up to the president and vow to repeal Obama’s health care plan.

FILE – In this Oct. 15, 2011, file photo, Penn State head coach Joe Paterno watches warm ups before an NCAA college football game against Purdue in State College, Pa. In his first public comments since being fired two months ago, former Penn State coach Paterno told the Washington Post he “didn’t know which way to go” after an assistant coach came to him in 2002 saying he had seen retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abusing a boy, the Post reported on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File)

(AP) ? Penn State’s Board of Trustees elected banking executive Karen Peetz to lead the embattled board and help the school negotiate the aftermath of a nightmarish child sex abuse scandal involving a former assistant football coach.

The trustees picked Peetz to be president of the 32-member board in a voice vote Friday. She is vice chairman of The Bank of New York Mellon. The trustees also elected farm owner Keith Masser as the vice chair. Like Peetz, he was unopposed.

They’re replacing Steve Garban and John Surma, respectively, who guided the board in the two tumultuous months since Jerry Sandusky was charged with dozens of counts of child sex abuse. They decided not to run for another yearlong term as board officers.

Under Garban and Surma’s watch, the board ousted football coach Joe Paterno and promised to uncover the truth behind the Sandusky case and Penn State officials’ involvement in it through an internal investigation.

In recent weeks, the trustees have felt increasing heat from some former alumni and players critical of how Paterno’s firing was handled, and what’s been seen as a lack of openness on the board.

“The first thing I want to say to the entire Penn State community is that we have been through a very difficult experience together. We have tried to do the right thing,” Peetz said. “All of us, including the board, with the wisdom of hindsight could have done things differently.”

She said the board agreed it would focus on three themes … “the first is change, the second is reform and the third is transparency.”

Sandusky, a longtime defensive coordinator who helped Paterno win two national titles, is out on bail and awaiting trial after denying charges that he abused 10 boys over 15 years.

The scandal resulting from his arrest Nov. 5 has had wide-ranging implications going beyond Paterno and the storied football program.

Since Sandusky was charged, the university has cited its status as a state-related university ? along with Temple, Pitt and Lincoln ? in denying requests by The Associated Press for documents related to a 1998 investigation into Sandusky that began when a woman complained he had showered with her son, a copy of his severance agreement and emails among top administrators about Sandusky.

Some state lawmakers have called for a change in the commonwealth’s three-year-old open records law to get rid of an exemption that allows Penn State and the other state-related universities to keep their operations out of the public eye while receiving taxpayer money.

“We have to decide, the board has to decide, whether they’re going to be a public entity that receives public funds or a private entity,” said Gov. Tom Corbett, who also is a trustee. “But it is something that is incumbent on the board in the next few weeks and months that the decision has to be made.”

The board is also undertaking its own investigation into the case. Ken Frazier, the trustee overseeing the effort, said results of the probe may now not come until next fall ? if then. Frazier added there was no “artificial timetable” ? he wants to give investigators ample time for thorough questioning.

Trustees have tabbed former FBI director Louis Freeh as their lead investigator. Frazier maintained Freeh, who has an office on campus, had free rein over the investigation and would not be beholden to pressures from the board or other university administrators.

Peetz also reiterated that the university “will find a way to make sure Penn State helps the victims of this tragedy.

“Immediately, we will reach out to the victims we know of and seek to pay for their abuse-related health costs, to pay for related counseling that they’ve had to have to date and pay for counseling going forward related to abuse,” she said. School President Rodney Erickson declined to give a range about how much it might cost.

General counsel Cynthia Baldwin said the university has been served legal notice that it was the subject of a second civil complaint related to the Sandusky case, though the lawsuit had not been filed. The first known civil suit was filed in late November.

The departures of Garban and Surma from leadership positions had nothing to do with the investigation, Frazier said. Garban had decided in November to step aside as the chairman, citing his past ties to the university and as a former football player.

Surma, an executive at U.S. Steel, said the duties of the board during the scandal increasingly took much time away from his job.

The board also approved five recommendations from Freeh, including a strengthening of school policies for programs involving minors; prompt reporting of allegations of abuse; and increased security measures within the athletic department.

It was the trustees’ first meeting since the chaotic week in November after Sandusky was charged, when Paterno was dumped and former school president Graham Spanier also was pushed out.

The meeting, in the ballroom of a campus hotel, drew a larger-than-normal crowd of at least 200 people, including a couple of candidates hoping to win election to the board this spring. Former Penn State running back Franco Harris, a vocal critic of the administration and a Paterno supporter, also attended and held a question-and-answer session afterward attended by about 100 people.

They listened to Harris and another critic, prominent donor and alumni Anthony Lubrano, air their grievances about the firing of Paterno and the way Penn State’s Board of Trustees functions. There were several white poster boards propped up in the front of the room with famous Joe Paterno quotes.

The crowd was very receptive to the duo, nodding their heads with each points and, at times, erupting into applause.

“It’s going to take people like you, here in this room, spreading the word,” Harris told the crowd. “It’s not a Penn State sex scandal, it’s not a Penn State football sex scandal, it’s not a Joe Paterno sex scandal. It’s a Jerry Sandusky sex scandal. And what the board did was wrong.”

The trustees have said Paterno was ousted in part because he had a moral obligation to pass on to police a 2002 allegation that was relayed to him by a graduate assistant. Paterno told his superiors at the university about the accusation, and authorities have said the coach is not a target of their criminal investigation.

“We still have respect and gratitude for coach Paterno’s legacy and for his many contributions to Penn State,” Peetz said, “and to (fired school President Graham) Spanier for his years of dedicated service and leadership.”

She said they intended to honor Paterno at a future date, though the timing was uncertain given Paterno is being treated for lung cancer.
